the winter season
SEASONS : Autumn | Winter | Spring | Summer
Once leaves have fallen from deciduous trees, the energy has returned to the tree and the sap has slowed down, trees can undergo pruning. If heavy pruning is necessary winter is the most ideal time.
Once the ground is cold pre-emergent sprays can be used on couch lawns to kill the winter grass and crabgrass seeds before they germinate.
Winter is the time to plant bare rooted fruit trees ornamentals and roses as they are dormant and usually quite a bit cheaper to purchase. If a tree requires moving transplanting in winter is the best time to do it. Some soil conditioners can also be useful to prevent transplantation shock.
July tends to be the best time to prune roses to avoid frost damage to new buds. Pruning should aim to remove spent and spindly growth and encourage vigorous strong canes. The use of a fungicide or spraying oil after pruning is also advisable.
Camellias and azaleas can be sourced readily in winter from suppliers however preparation with he right soils is essential with these acid loving plants
